Opening up the world of financial services to young adults

Students raising their hands in the air for sustainability

As a company, we not only aspire to grow, but to also give back to our community, which is why we endeavour to support local and national charities such as The Smith Family.

The Smith Family is a national, independent children’s charity dedicated to providing long-term support to young Australians from disadvantaged backgrounds. Currently, The Smith Family work with 94 communities across the country, giving those in need access to careers programs, educational resources and initiatives, and mentoring services.

As the next generation of the Australian workforce, we feel it’s important that today’s youth are educated on the different career paths available once they leave the classroom.

This December, in partnership with KKR, we worked with The Smith Family, and welcomed a group of students from Alexandria Park School, into our office to give them an insight into what it really is to work in financial services. The students also had the opportunity to hear about how some of our employees came to work in financial services and how they made their career decisions.  An interactive skills matching workshop was held to encourage the students to think about what each job involves and what skills they would need to do that role.

To reward the students for all their hard work, the office joined the students for morning tea, where they had the opportunity to ask about staff job roles and what they did day to day.

“It was really useful learning about everyone’s journey into their current job, and that University isn’t the be all and end all.”

“You don’t have to go to University to get where you are unless you want to. Some people start from the bottom and make their way to where they want to be.”

“It helped me think clearer about what I want to do when I leave school.”

The day was enjoyed by students and staff and, it’s safe to say, everyone learnt something from the morning.
